South African music star Thendeka Ngema, popularly known as MaWhoo, has spoken out after a deeply traumatic incident in which she and her driver were allegedly attacked while travelling in the North West province.

The shocking incident reportedly occurred while MaWhoo and her team were en route to Sun City from a prior engagement, ahead of her scheduled performance at the RustyRocks Metro FM Tap Into 2026 New Year’s Eve event. According to information shared by sources close to the artist, the group encountered what has been described as a racially motivated attack, during which both MaWhoo and her driver were seriously assaulted and their vehicle damaged.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, the award-winning singer expressed gratitude that she survived the ordeal, while also revealing the emotional impact it had had on her.

“It was my first time seeing a *** pointed directly at my face,” MaWhoo said, describing the terrifying encounter.

She confirmed that the attackers’ vehicle registration numbers were captured, a development that has since strengthened her team’s resolve to pursue the matter legally.

As a result of the incident, MaWhoo was unable to perform at the highly anticipated Metro FM Tap Into 2026 New Year’s Eve celebration held at Sun City Resort. Fans who had expected to see her take the stage were left disappointed, prompting her management team to issue a formal apology.

In a statement released shortly after the event, MaWhoo Entertainment confirmed the attack and explained that, despite multiple efforts, the artist couldn’t arrive safely or on time.

“Despite all reasonable efforts by MaWhoo Entertainment and the RustyRocks team, the artist couldn’t arrive in time,” the statement read.

The management further acknowledged the disappointment caused to fans and event organisers, stressing that safety remained the top priority.

Following the incident, MaWhoo announced the cancellation of all her January performances, citing the need to recover from both the physical shock and emotional trauma of the attack.

Her team confirmed that the decision was taken to allow the singer time to recuperate, heal, and regain her strength after an intense festive season compounded by the distressing experience.

“She will be taking time off to fully recover and rejuvenate,” the statement said.

Legal Action and Broader Concerns

MaWhoo’s management has also confirmed that legal action is being pursued, stating that the alleged perpetrators’ details have been obtained and handed over for further investigation.

“We have ascertained the perpetrators’ details, and we will be seeking further legal recourse,” the statement added.

The incident has reignited national conversations around the safety of artists on South African roads, particularly during the festive season when performers travel long distances under tight schedules. It has also raised renewed concerns about racially motivated violence and the vulnerability of public figures while touring.

The attack comes during an already challenging period for MaWhoo. Throughout 2025, she has faced legal battles, including a high-profile defamation lawsuit involving Blue Screen Entertainment linked to her appearance at the Durban Music Festival.

Despite these challenges, MaWhoo has continued to maintain a strong presence in the music industry, making the recent incident all the more unsettling for fans and fellow artists alike.

As investigations continue, many in Mzansi’s entertainment industry are calling for greater protections, accountability, and support systems to ensure that artists can perform their work without fear for their lives
