Lionel Messi Returning Back To Barcelona: Víctor Font Reveals When it Could be Possible

Victor Font has revealed that a return for Lionel Messi to FC Barcelona remains possible — but only under new leadership.

Speaking during the club’s pre-election period, the Barcelona presidential candidate stated that Messi’s comeback hinges on the outcome of the upcoming elections. According to Font, the primary obstacle to reconciliation is the current administration led by Joan Laporta.

“As everyone knows, the only obstacle to Messi’s return is Joan Laporta. If we win the elections, Messi’s last dance is possible.”

As reported by Ara.cat, Font has outlined a broader proposal that extends beyond a symbolic return to the pitch.

He said his proposals include: Facilitating Messi’s return for a proper on-field farewell, appointing him as Honorary President of Barcelona, and reinforcing the club’s institutional identity by reconnecting with its greatest icon.

Font claims discussions were held with Messi’s family over a year ago and that the proposal has the player’s approval.

We’ve spoken with everyone,” Font stated.

He emphasized that bringing Messi back would not only be a sporting gesture but also an institutional one — restoring what he described as a global symbol of Barcelona’s identity.

Messi departed Barcelona in 2021 after financial complications prevented the renewal of his contract, eventually joining Paris Saint-Germain.

Font argued that Messi was left disappointed on two separate occasions — first in 2021 during contract renewal discussions, and again in 2023 when a potential return under then-coach Xavi Hernandez did not materialize.

“Messi cannot end his time with Barça with a farewell in a closed room. It’s unthinkable. Messi must retire on the pitch.”

According to Font, any proper farewell must take place in Barcelona colors, in front of supporters, rather than through a private ceremony.

He described Messi as more than just a footballer, calling him:

A hard-working, committed, and honest leader who loves Barça.”

Font argues that Messi embodies the values traditionally associated with the Catalan club and believes his return would strengthen Barcelona’s global brand while restoring emotional unity among supporters.

However, the feasibility of such a return would depend on:

Election results, Messi’s physical condition, and contractual situation by late 2026.

Barcelona’s presidential election will ultimately determine whether Font’s proposal moves forward. If the current leadership remains in place, a Messi farewell under this plan appears unlikely.

For now, the possibility of Lionel Messi returning to Camp Nou — whether for a competitive stint or a ceremonial farewell — remains tied directly to the political landscape inside the club.
