“After 662 Days Without A Start, I Learned Patience, I Learned Humility” – Thapelo Maseko Reflects On AEL Limassol Return
South African winger Thapelo Maseko has opened up about resilience and personal growth after making his first competitive start in 662 days.
The 22-year-old attacker, formerly of Mamelodi Sundowns, took to Instagram to reflect on his journey following a lengthy spell without a starting appearance. His emotional post came after featuring for AEL Limassol in a Cyprus League clash against Pafos FC.
“662 days without a start… I learned patience… I learned humility… I learned who I am. Last night meant more than words can explain,” Maseko wrote.
AEL Limassol fell 1–0 to Pafos FC in a tightly contested league encounter, but for Maseko, the result was secondary. Playing just over 80 minutes, the match marked a deeply personal breakthrough after nearly two years without starting a competitive fixture.
Having moved to Cyprus during the January transfer window, the loan spell appears to represent a reset in his career. For a young player once regarded as one of South Africa’s promising wide talents, consistent game time is critical to rebuilding rhythm and confidence.
Though the scoreboard reflected a narrow defeat, Maseko’s return to the starting lineup symbolized progress after a prolonged period on the sidelines.
His Instagram post quickly drew reactions from across the football community. Encouraging messages came from current and former teammates.
Among those who responded were Sundowns defender Grant Kekana and other colleagues offering words of support.
Former SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt also shared a heartfelt message:
“Keep your head up, my boy. You were always great! Glad we have the old Thaps back.”
Fellow South African and AEL teammate Luther Singh added:
“The best is yet to come.”
Loan moves often serve as turning points in professional football careers. For Maseko, the transition to Cyprus provides an opportunity for consistent minutes and renewed confidence away from the intense competition for places at Mamelodi Sundowns.
At 22, time remains firmly on his side. Regular involvement at AEL Limassol could allow him to rebuild momentum and reestablish himself as a dynamic attacking option capable of contributing goals and creativity.
While the 1–0 loss to Pafos FC may not have delivered league points, it delivered something arguably more valuable for the player himself: validation after 662 days of waiting.
If his recent start signals a new chapter rather than a one-off appearance, 2026 could mark the year Thapelo Maseko’s career regains forward motion.
